Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night

Who is Guy Fawkes:

In contemporary vernacular and history, Guy Fawkes is renowned as an arch-villain and a traitor. He is an embodiment of Catholic extremism. Fawkes joined the Gunpowder plot under the leadership of Robert Catesby.

On the midnight on 4th November 1605, Fawkes was arrested with thirty-six barrels of gunpowder, stacked in the cellar, directly below where the king would have been sitting for the opening of parliament the next day. Fawkes, who was caught red-handed under the Houses of Parliament, was publicly executed. This failed gunpowder plot was a propaganda coup for the Protestant English. It further served as a pretext for further repression of Catholics.

By the 19th century, Fawkes effigy was placed on the bonfires that were lit annually to commemorate the failure of the plot.

People celebrate Guy Fawkes Day with fireworks, bonfires and parades across the UK. It is an annual celebration observed on November 5 for more than 400 years.
